The Dream faces Rougarou to become a two-weight champion

It's fight day and at yesterday's weigh-in Haney looked in amazing shape. The former undisputed lightweight champion had looked drained at the lower but the ripped San Francisco-born fighter has filled out into the bigger division. Prograis looked fierce and fired up for today's contest, which will be upon us in a few hours' time.

Saturday will be Devin Haney's first fight up at super lightweight, but there was a definite sense that The Dream was struggling to make weight in his final bout at 135lbs. A tricky operator who may even move on up to welterweight and challenge the undisputed champ Terrence Crawford in the future, Haney boxes well at range and has notched up comfortable defeats of Jorge Linares and George Kambosos Jr.

Regis Prograis is also fighting for the second time this year after earning a split decision to keep his WBC belt against Danielito Zorrilla. The 34-year-old southpaw, whose Rougarou nickname means 'werewolf' in Louisiana French, has boxed at world level for five years and lost just once, to Josh Taylor for three super lightweight belts in 2019. An 11th round knockout of Jose Zepeda in November 2022 made him a world champion and he has the grit and determination to challenge Haney's skill.

Haney is a smart, technical fighter and has the grade to start as favorite but there's no way Prograis will give up that famous green strap without putting up a hell of a fight.

Fight day has arrived and at yesterday's weigh-in, Devin Haney looked in incredible shape. Having appeared drained at the lower weight in recent fights, the former undisputed lightweight champion looks far more comfortable in the 140lb division. Regis Prograis was also extremely fired up for today's fights, which will take place in a few hours' time.

Having already defeated big names in Yuriorkis Gamboa and Jorge Linares, Devin Haney made history in the summer of 2022 when he outpointed George Kambosos Jr. to become the first undisputed lightweight champion in the four-belt era. The American would follow that performance up with an even more convincing victory in the rematch, dominating the Australian over 12 one-sided rounds.

Earlier this year Haney secured a unanimous decision against Ukrainian superstar Vasiliy Lomachenko as he cemented his position as the best lightweight in the world. Now, the undefeated 25-year-old looks to explore new territory as he bids to become a two-weight world champion.

However, he faces a serious challenge in his first fight at 140lbs against the heavy-handed Regis Prograis who has stopped 24 of his 30 opponents. The 34-year-old has lost just once as a professional, back in 2019 to Josh Taylor, and won the WBC super-lightweight title in emphatic fashion with a KO victory over Jose Zepeda.

Earlier this year ‘Rougarou’ secured a split decision victory over Danielito Zorrilla and is now determined to inflict a first-ever pro defeat on Haney. He certainly has the power and will be confident of securing a stoppage if he can land clean. But that won’t be easy against a skilful operator like ‘The Dream’ who will hope to use his superior movement and fast hands to become the new champion.

The former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is back after his controversial win over Vassily Lomachenko in May. After his fight with the Ukrainian, he decided to move up in weight and jump from the 135 to the 140-pound division looking for new challenges.

The boxing world awaits one of the most important fights towards the end of the year as Devin Haney looks to claim his second world title in a different division against Regis Prograis, with the pair facing off for the WBC super lightweight belt.

The Californian boxer is seeking to become a two-weight world champion, with the fight set to take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California.

Haney, after reaching the top of the lightweight division and capturing the undisputed title, made the bold decision to vacate his titles to take on the super lightweight challenge.

He will take on Prograis, who boasts a record of 29-1 and 24 KOs. The American will defend his WBC title for the second time after successfully seeing off Danielito Zorrilla in April.

Haney vacated his lightweight titles to focus on the super lightweight challenge. His goal is clear: to capture the title and extend his impressive undefeated streak as a professional boxer (30-0, 15 KOs).

Prograis (29-1, 24 KOs) only defeat came in 2019 against Josh Taylor, after that loss he retaliated with four consecutive knockout victories and at 34 years of age he is one of the most solid fighters in the game today, which makes for a great fight.

This is one of the last premier boxing matches of the year and for good reason. While Prograis is a proven veteran who has finished four out of his last five trips to the boxing ring by way of knockout, Haney is one of the most promising young champions in the sport. For better or worse, this weekend is about him.

The 25-year-old is coming off a key victory over Vasyl Lomachenko earlier this year. Having defeated George Kambosos Jr. in back-to-back fights to become the first undisputed lightweight champion in the four-belt era it was important for Haney to beat another top name. Lomachenko was that guy and the victory launched Haney to another level in his career. He’ll try to prolong that rise tonight in front of his home crowd.

The matchup itself is a true banger, but when you mix in the animosity between both fighters this weekend’s clash hits an entirely new level. Remember, Prograis launched an explicit tirade against Haney and the California fans on Friday. It was an intense scene and something that should fuel both fighters entering Saturday’s main event.

While this is a sensational matchup on paper there hasn’t been much buzz surrounding Haney vs. Prograis. Boxing is coming off a Ryan Garcia fight weekend and it seems like a lot of steam has been lost heading into tonight’s fight card in California. Even with a wild moment at Friday’s weigh ins when Prograis verbally attacked Haney and the fans in attendance this fight appears to be stuck in gear.
